The Groove Warehouse is the place in Canberra to play drums while learning the basics of music rhythm, music reading, and pulse. Our drum students play rock & pop, funk, classic rock & roll, and Latin and afro Cuban styles, to name just a few!
The Groove School runs group drumming classes with up to 8 students so each drummer has the benefit of learning from peers and spending one-on-one time with our teachers. Every student plays a real acoustic drumkit that is dampened down with Hush series low volume cymbals.
We currently offer two age groups: teen drum classes and adult drum classes from Tuesday - Thursday evenings. Access our student portal below.

Drum Lesson FAQs
How much do drum lessons cost?
We offer three different class structures for each age group based on the complexity of the curriculum and skill level of students. Classes are charged per term.

If you are an existing student in our group class program - you are eligible for our scholarship program. Scholarships are awarded on a case-by-case basis.
What is the yearly schedule for the Groove School?
We run our classes on the same schedule as the ACT school year, with four 10-week terms. For 2024, those terms are:

How often do classes run?
Classes run once weekly during the term from Tuesday to Thursday.
Can I book more lessons outside of class? Do you offer private lessons?
If you're looking for more time with a teacher or want to get more hands-on drumming advice, we also offer private tutoring with the Groove School Director, Malcolm.
Private tuition is booked in blocks of up to four 45-minute weekly sessions. Each block of four sessions is $360. Individual, one-off sessions are charged at $90 per session.
Tutoring runs throughout the year, including during school holidays. Reach out for your private drum tutoring quote here.
Please note that all tutoring lessons are held onsite at Groove Warehouse.
What do drum lessons involve?
Every week, students follow a lesson plan from trained drummers to learn:
- Proper technique
- Note reading
- Coordination
- Practice techniques
- Creativity.
Each class learns a few songs to showcase at our end-of-year Christmas Concert, where the community comes together to show off their drumming skills to their friends and family!
Can I choose what level of drum class I am?
Our teachers will assess your drumming skills at the start of every term and place you in a class that is the right level of challenge for you.
What age is too late to learn drums?
It's never too late to learn drums or pick up a new skill! We offer lessons from teens all the way through to seniors. All our students come to us with varying music experience. Learning drums is a great way to improve coordination, keep your mind sharp, experience your favourite songs in new ways, and meet new people.
How long does it take to learn drums?
Learning any instrument is like learning a language or building muscle - the longer you do it, the more it becomes second nature. But if you don't flex it, you lose the ability. You can pick up the basics in a standard term but we always say practice (outside of class) makes perfect!
